Marston's encouraged by holiday trading

Marston's has revealed improving trading in all three of its divisions, with managed pub like-for-like sales up 1.4% for the 6 months to 3 April.
The group has an estate of 2,167 pubs, based on 1,676 tenanted or leased pubs and 491 managed pubs.

Is real ale the new chardonnay for women?

New research released today in National Cask Ale Week has found that 37 per cent of female alcohol drinkers have now tried real ale, compared to just 16 per cent in June 2008.
This unprecedented increase has coincided with reports earlier in the week stating the real ale industry has just undergone its first full year of growth for 28 years, and comes at a time when there are currently more small breweries in operation across the UK than at any time since the Second World War.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) have decided that pub companies which force licensees to buy beer through their landlord are not doing anything wrong.

Britain's pub groups will welcome today's decision but the ruling will be a blow to the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) which used its power as a designated consumer watchdog to make a 'super-complaint' to the OFT over 'tied arrangements' in July.

He claims he made the uplifting discovery by accident when machines at his automated brewery in Schoenbrunn in Bavaria, Germany, broke down.

British brewery numbers soar

Britain has more small breweries than any other major industrialised nation, according to the Good Beer Guide.
Despite falling beer sales and pub closures running at a rate of 50 a week, 71 breweries were established in the last year alone, capitalise on demand for quirkier ales. Of the 711 breweries in the UK, West Yorkshire has the most (34), followed by Norfolk (31), Derbyshire and North Yorkshire (both 28) and Devon (27).

Punch & Enterprise invited to talks

Fair Pint, the anti-pubco lobby group has invited Punch and Enterprise to a meeting to discuss a way forward for the pub industry. This follows the damning Business and Enterprise Committee report.

The meeting will take place on 14 July at Westminster and as well as the two major pubcos, invites have gone out to front bench members of the three main political parties, brewers, trade associations and members of the Business and Enterprise Committee.
